December in Miami marks a time of artistic-cohesion, as the cultured elite flock to the magic city to finish the year in the sun, sand and series of exhibitions that make up Design Miami and Art Basel. Helping these design-conscious connoisseurs relax and party this year is the Thompson Miami Beach, a boutique hotel on the beach front designed by our New York Studio.

LA WITH STEVEN HARRINGTON

21st November 2014

California native Steven Harrington was always destined to be an artist. From an early age, his self-described “hippy mum” gave him a bohemian education, immersing him in the playful atmosphere of early Californian art and design. As an artist, it is no surprise then that his work has been described as having a Californian Psychedelic Pop Aesthetic.

STUDIO JOURNAL : THE CLOUD CLUB

14th November 2014

The Chrysler Building is a New York institution. All 77 floors of the art deco skyscraper are deep-rooted as part of New York’s recognisable skyline and fondly ingrained in the genetic makeup of the city that never sleeps.
However, vacant and lost in the fabric of the building is the Cloud Club; un-kept, desolate and still occupying the 66th, 67th and 68th floors. The onetime playroom of Walter P. Chrysler and his fellow moguls opened in July 1930 and has since been ravaged by time and neglect.

MARTIN BRUDNIZKI FOR THE URBAN ELECTRIC COMPANY

6th November 2014

As interior designers, we’re accustomed to creating bespoke pieces for our clients. Whether it is designing the perfect object for a project or if we feel the functionality of the design dictates a need for something specific. We often work with specialist manufacturers to create custom made designs. It is this experience that I felt placed us in the perfect position to launch product collaborations and I’m excited to announce our work with American lantern-design luminaries, the Urban Electric Company.

Studio Scrapbook: Abandoned Interiors

Studio    |    Scrapbook
31st October 2014

All Hallow’s Eve is upon us and rather than run for the hills, here at MBDS we’re getting inspired by the derelict beauty of abandoned abodes.
Images of Havisham-esq interiors taken in grand houses which have since grown to be un-kept and perilous have been fascinating us; as we attempt to envisage how beautiful they must’ve been in their prime. The haunting beauty of peeling wallpaper, chipped ceiling eaves and worn furniture fabric evokes a melancholic mystery and curiosity into the lost decadence of these houses and the lives of the residents whom once lived there. We’ve collated a selection of images from both past and present to intrigue, inspire and perhaps even spook.

LONDON WITH SOLI ZARDOSHT

Studio    |    A City With
15th August 2014

Many creatives are able to lend their eye, hand or taste buds to a variety of different disciplines. However specialising and succeeding in these fields is what makes a true polymath. Soli Zardosht definitely falls into the latter of these categories, as she left her role as a successful menswear designer to combine her Persian heritage and love of cooking to bring a taste of the Middle East to Dalston.

STUDIO JOURNAL: QUENTIN BLAKE ‘INSIDE STORIES’

8th August 2014

Whether we think back to the political satirist James Gillray and his infamous 19th century illustration entitled ‘The world being carved up into spheres of influence between Pitt and Napoleon’, the fact Honoré Daumier’s political cartoons find themselves in the cannon of European art or the interest surrounding the front cover of The New Yorker – it is evident that illustration has long had a special place in our hearts.
